How to get your insurance to cover manual therapy
A patient with a prescription written for “myofascial massage” or “manual therapy” can receive a super bill for their appointment. A super bill is a way for patients with adequate health insurance to be partially or fully reimbursed by their insurance companies for their massage. Patients pay for the massage upfront as usual and send the super bill to their insurance for processing.*
Step One: Verification.
Call your insurance provider to verify that your policy covers the following CPT codes when they are done by a manual therapist:
97140 (Manual Therapy)
97112 (Neuromuscular Therapy)
Step Two: Obtain a Prescription.
Obtain a prescription for manual therapy or myofascial massage.** The prescription must include the ICD-10 code(s), or diagnosis codes, and must be written by a physician.
**A prescription for physical therapy is not valid.
Step Three: Submit Your Super Bill for Reimbursement.
Please bring your prescription to your appointment. After your session, you will pay for the massage and we will give you a super bill which will contain all the necessary information that your insurance provider will require for reimbursement.
*In some cases, manual therapy sessions at SMSM can be applied to an insurance deductible. Ask your insurance company if this is an option.
